Dragon Shadow Puppets Perform to Wish You a Happy Chinese New Years!

Earlier this month spiky dragons danced and cavorted to traditional Asian music in a magical shadow puppet show. First graders were very excited to perform for staff members, parents and our teacher, and then pose for a photo op. 

We hope our dragons bring us much luck in the New Year!!!

African Textiles Provide an Endless Source of Inspiration!

As a part of our textile unit last month, second graders explored Kuba cloth from Zaire. We examined technique, inspiration, purpose, the definition of a textile, and whether a textile is art and why… 

We also learned a few art and math concepts along the way:) What do we see? Diagonal and parallel lines, geometric shapes? (yes!), organic shapes? (no!)

On day two we explored neutral colors using chalk pastels. Some of our Kuba drawings and Kente weavings are on display in the Great Hall! We hope you enjoy them!

Networking With Art Educators is Good Stuff... and Lots of Fun!

Ms. Johnson and I spent an educational and enjoyable evening at the Phillips Collection last Thursday participating in a DCAE (DC Arts Educators) meet and mingle. The Phillips Collection hosted us in style with tickets to see the Van Gogh exhibition, fun favors (check out Ms. M and Ms. J in the postman's beard) and delicious food and drink! 

I once again rediscovered that arts educators across the city are a delightful, vivacious and creative bunch!
